While detrimental to the local economy, the COVID-19 pandemic also brought about changes that have had positive impacts. High-population areas like New York City had the greatest rates of COVID-19 cases, and this inspired some people to move to more rural areas like Delaware County. The county’s occupancy tax is currently approximately 40% higher than it was in 2019, said Ray Pucci, president of the Delaware County Chamber of Commerce. This suggests that the county saw more visitors in 2020 than in previous years.
Along with a population increase, many people began spending more time at home and several industries profited off of this newly-found free time. Many building supply and hardware companies saw an increase in profits as people had more time to work on home renovation projects.
